“There are so many interfaith and secular families who want to explore Judaism at their own pace or who struggle with the issues of raising Jewish children when one parent is not Jewish. Woven Roots meets these needs without pressure, without judgement and without a hidden agenda. We are so proud to be a lead supporter of this important work.”

Chelsea Hylton
Founder & Executive Director
Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Chelsea also lived in Charleston, SC, where she earned her B.S. in Physical Education at the College of Charleston. With over a decade in New Orleans, she brings an extensive background in nonprofit management and education. Upon moving to New Orleans in 2014, Chelsea served as both a K–12 enrichment and middle school English teacher. In 2016, she founded Project Peaceful Warriors, a nonprofit that supports healing-centered learning spaces in New Orleans through trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness. As Founding Director, she grew the organization to serve over 30 schools and community-based organizations, reaching more than 15,000 young people and 5,000 educators in the Greater New Orleans area. During this time, she collaborated with the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine to measure program impact, with her work published in the Journal of Psychology Research and Behavior Management. Chelsea now serves as a proud board member. She was also the visionary Director of the Sherry and Alan Leventhal Center for Interfaith Families, a dynamic program of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Orleans, where she pioneered inclusive initiatives that deepened connections to Jewish life and community.
Chelsea is now the Founder and Director of Woven Roots, a nonprofit dedicated to cultivating vibrant and inclusive spaces for intergenerational Jewish experiences centered in connection, wonder, joy, and possibility. Through Woven Roots, Chelsea aims to build community that honors intersectional identities, reflects local culture, and embraces individual uniqueness. She believes we can embody a dynamic and adaptable approach to living Jewishly, evolving together in relationship to heritage, practice, and meaning. Chelsea’s community work extends to maternal health, including facilitating postpartum support groups with The Fourth Trimester & Beyond, an initiative of Tulane’s Psychiatry Clinic. She completed Healthy Birth Ambassador training through Healthy Birth Louisiana and is a trained full-spectrum doula. Outside of her professional and volunteer commitments, Chelsea finds joy in the outdoors. On sunny days in New Orleans, she can often be found chasing her son Axel— usually in a superhero costume — bringing to life the spirit of curiosity and playfulness she carries through every aspect of her life.
